Now it's official. FIFA and UEFA issued a statement in which they announced the immediate suspension of Russian clubs and national teams from international competitions "until further decision". Thus, the measure affects the Russian team, which was going to play, in March, the semi-final of the playoff access to the 2022 World Cup with Poland, and Spartak Moscow, which in the round of 16 of the Europa League would face Leipzig.
In the note, the two bodies ended up not revealing whether Poland and Leipzig will advance directly to the next stage of their respective competitions or will measure forces with another opponent.
"Following the initial decisions taken by the FIFA Council and the UEFA Executive Committee, which provided for the adoption of additional measures, FIFA and UEFA jointly decided today that all Russian teams, whether national representative teams or club teams , will be suspended from participating in competitions. Both FIFA and UEFA until further notice. (...) Football is fully united and in full solidarity with all affected people in Ukraine. Both presidents hope that the situation in Ukraine will improve significantly and quickly so that football can once again be a factor of unity and peace between people", it can be read.
UEFA also announced the immediate termination of the sponsorship contract it had with Gazprom, a Russian state-owned company and the world's largest natural gas export company, affecting contracts with the Champions League, national team competitions and Euro2024.
This Monday, the historic German club Schalke 04 also announced that it had terminated its contract with the Russian company, with which it had a sponsorship agreement since 2007.
